news from #occupy

Well I have written a response to fellow blogger Yotam Marom to his article about occupy wall st. a couple days ago thanking him and all the 99% that are protesting against the 1% that sucks this planet bone dry, here’s what he replied:

Sorry for the delayed response. Things are crazy down here, as you can imagine.

Thanks for your kind words about my piece. I appreciate it.
I just published another yesterday, if you’re curious:

Limpar Portugal an environmental community service.

This volunteering service is one of the great non-pretentious non-preaching objectives, and let’s be honest for a moment here: we all know by now the “problem” we have in our hands so let’s just face it- roll up our sleeves and try to do our bit, while in Portugal we have a natural well being apart from that oil tanker incident that even wasn’t our fault, yes- Spain I’m pointing my finger at you, we always have been environmentally fairly educated and this initiative is truly important because we will concentrate volunteering groups in each big or minor cities and clean up some forests throughout Portugal, which will surely make the difference because in Portugal we suffer from hot summer wildfires and we are trying to reduce that number dramatically, oh and the message it’s good as well ;)

So if you live in Portugal join us and help us clean and maintain European forests.

The bitch that stole my job.

Literally.

This cute puppy was adopted by a guy who works on some advertising agency, and he thought to turn her into quote “creative advisor” not mascot, which I was uncomfortable at first seeing I am unemployed at this stage, I always thought humans would become rendered obsolete by computers/machines, not stray dogs.

well Tura the dog has some advantages she has four legs, and 11 Canne’s Lion awards for Pete’s sake.

Website intro

For my final project in this enduring course I chose to make an ecological website with animations seeing I’m an Animation student as well, I was all like: I’m gonna do something fun for a change, a website with a clear message, how to be more green, because everyone should be more green these days, so here’s the intro to that website, the website itself is still in the pipeline and should be up and running in a couple of weeks… watch this space…

Design rules?

This is taken from a Computer Arts interview with David Carson (http://www.davidcarsondesign.com).

CA:Do you think contemporary designers depend too heavily on the abilities of their software packages?

DC: Absolutely. I work in basically one program, Quark. It’s not about having and knowing all the latest gimmicks and photo tricks. Good design comes from the most basic decisions – cropping, font choice, the overall design. If you haven’t got the eye, no program will give it to you.

It’s partly why we see so many solid, well-designed magazines today, but almost none that stand out. Designers get lazy and let whoever made their software make decisions for them. Your computer shouldn’t tell you the proper distance between columns of type – you need to be making those decisions. Get that title, subtitle and byline out of the same box!

yeah although this guy is highly respectable, I’m laughing out loud just thinking about those rookies trying to align text without the latest software packages, that’s part of tech evolution making technology more accessible, more easy to use, of course we (designers, pro’s and rookies) shouldn’t be a puppet to our tools, we should help innovate the tools themselves… this is turning into like the argument of old school vs new school.

I’m not a hater, I just don’t like hypocritical arguments, nuff said!
